This review presents and evaluates the existing scientific evidence
for the effectiveness of complementary/alternative (CAM) interventions
for pain symptoms in children. The review included controlled trials
and/or multiple baseline studies that focused on either chronic pain
or acute procedural pain. Only one CAM approach reviewed (self-hypnosis/guided
imagery/relaxation for recurrent pediatric headache) qualified as an
empirically supported therapy, although many may be considered possibly
effective or promising treatments for pediatric pain. The therapies
reviewed include acupuncture, biofeedback, creative arts, herbal medicine,
homeopathy, hypnosis and massage. Tsao JCI and Zeltzer LK. Evidence-Based
Complementary Alternative Medicine. 2(2): 149-159, June 2005.
