New meta-analyses (reviews of studies) confirm that older-style antidepressants
can help lessen neuropathic pain. Over 50 trials of 19 antidepressants
were part of this review. Older tricyclic anti-depressants like amitriptyline
proved especially helpful. More studies need to be done on the newer
classes of antidepressants such as selective serontonin reuptake inhibitors
(SSRIs) and selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs) as
well as on herbal medicines such as St. John’s Wort and dietary
supplements such as L-tryptophan. Saarto T & Witten PJ. "Antidepressants
for neuropathic pain." Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.
