A new review of data from 24 studies that included 2,177 patients with
low back pain showed that neither continuous nor intermittent use of
traction was more effective in improving pain, disability or attendance
at work than placebo, no treatment at all, or traction in combination
with other treatments. No significant difference was found in outcomes
between a standard physical therapy program with continuous traction
and the same program without traction for patients with a mixed duration
of low back pain, with or without sciatica. Clarke JA, et al. “Traction
for low-back pain with or without sciatica (review).” The Cochrane
Database of Systematic Reviews 2005, Issue 4.
