Over a three-month period, 250 patients with back or neck pain took
1200 mg a day of fish oil supplements. Fifty-nine percent discontinued
their prescription NSAID medications for pain. Sixty percent stated
their overall pain was improved and 60% stated their joint pain had
improved. No significant side effects were reported. These results support
the findings of other controlled studies that found omega-3 fatty acids
to be as effective as ibuprofen in reducing arthritic pain, with fewer
risks of complications and side effects. Maroon JC, Bost JW. Omega-3
fatty acids (fish oil) as an anti-inflammatory: an alternative to nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs for discogenic pain. Surg Neurol, 2006
