In a small study of 12 long-term meditators published in NeuroReport,
there was a 40-50% lower brain response to pain compared to 12 healthy
controls. When the 12 controls then learned and practiced TM for five
months, their brain responses to pain also decreased by a comparable
40-50%. This study suggests that the benefits of meditation represent
not just a positive change in attitude, but a fundamental change in
